Love and Money
Jorge is a waiter at a restaurant. Abdul was also a waiter who works in this same restaurant. Sue is the chef
in the kitchen. Sophie and her friend Rose work at the same beauticians nail salon. There is also a bank clerk.
who works at the bank. The story is about a couple meeting on a first date. Jorge and Sophie met where Jorge
works. Jorge (acts like) pretends to be a customer who is taking Sophie for dinner. The conflict is that Sophie
misinterprets Jorge’s taking her to a fine restaurant and thinks Jorge is rich, so she brings up the topic up of
banks. Jorge misunderstand this and then think that Sophie only wants to date a man who is rich.Jorge and
Sophie complement each other. Abdul, the waiter, calls Jorge by his surname, “Mr. Ortega, your table is ready.”
They are served bottled water which is a good choice as Jorge said that. Sophie asks Jorge how long he has
lived in New York City, and Jorge says two years. Sophie is surprised. Only two years? Jorge is so successful.
She adds, “You didn’t take long.” Jorge says that he knows how to take care of his money. Sophie mentions that
her bank does not give her the services she wants, and then she asks Jorge which bank he uses? Jorge coughs
and excuses himself to see Abdul in the kitchen for assistance. Jorge asks Abdul to help him because Sophie
mentioned the bank. Jorge says, “Sophie thinks I am rich.” Abdul tells Jorge that he should mention that he has
a checking account. Sue adds, “Tell Sophie that you have two accounts: a checking account and a savings
account. Abdul and Sue advise Jorge to change the subject, and then Sue says, “Speak about it another time
and Jorge follow their advice.When the check arrives, Sophie offers to pay, but then Jorge insist on paying,
mentioning that the restaurant knows him. Jorge plans a next date with Sophie at the bank.Later, at the nail
salon, Sophie cannot believe that she was talking about banks on the date, and Rose adds that she knew he
was rich and the date was a success. However, Sophie is not sure if it was a success. At the restaurant, Jorge
ask Abdul’s assistance to open an account at the back and Sue tells them a story about Carlos who was
cheated by a lawyer and left with Carlos money. Jorge also, explains that his sister had a bank account and the
bank took money for everything and it was the same. Abdul then explains that not all banks are the same and
that Jorge must ask questions to open a suitable account..
During this time, Rose offers to introduce Sophie to her bank services and takes her there. Sophie cashes her
checks at the shop, and they charge for cashing checks. While Rose said that her bank does not charge. It is
free. Rose mentions that sending money is also free, while Sophie says that there is a charge for sending money
to Haiti. Rose offers mentions that her salary goes straight into her bank account and it’s easy and saves time,
the boss at her salon banks the salary monthly. Sophie taught that it was difficult to open an account as an
immigrant. Rose offers to take her to the bank after work.
